This year in Nigeria came with its highs and its very real lows, moments of resilience, creativity, and hope, alongside uncertainty, pressure, and collective fatigue. We turned 5 this year, and we know for a fact that we would not have made it this far without every one of you. Through it all, what stood out was our ability to adapt, to keep showing up, and to keep choosing community.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who stayed engaged with 234 Essential during a year that demanded so much from us all. Thank you for holding space for honest conversations, reflection, and growth. As we move forward, we do so grounded, wiser, and still hopeful… together.

September has come to an end, and in its wake, October is here!!! Officially the last quarter of the year begins (Whoop).
Happy New Month of October ( and though some people might cringe), Happy Independence Day +234. 65 years and… here we are. We celebrate regardless because it’s been a herculean task being Nigerian, buttttt we would have it no other way, and we need to keep hope alive (Remember that episode of Sandman where the King of Dreams was warring it out with the Devil? That’s what comes to mind every time there’s a hopeless feeling).

So chin up, Tribers! we are not where we want to be, but we are not where we used to be either. It gets better. I mean as long as there are people like Ugochi and AOT2, you and a few good people.. We look to a brighter day.

September came with heavy downpours and some missed episodes (Ooops), but October and the rest of the year promises to be packed and better.

Marvis is also a registered coach and mentor with the Chartered Institute of Corporate Mentoring and Coaching of Nigeria and remains committed to taking on new challenges in trauma-informed mentorship and youth advocacy.

Hello Tribe!!! How are y'all doing in these Emperor Tinubu days? The Naira is being bullied by the US dollar and the Naira is failing to fight back! Sobs in Fx Chai, Uwa! The world is a strange place * inserts Nollywood soundtrack* Real-time though, October is quickly coming to an end, and before we know it, BOOM! It's 2024.. While we still have some weeks till the end of the year, let's make it count. The Flu has been in the air in Nigeria, so make sure to beef up on your vitamins, try to rest when you can (Lagos people just left the group chat hehehe), work out and eat well.

For our listeners in the diaspora, reports reaching us in Lagos speak to cooler climates and the coming of Halloween, but that one no really concern una, because which one consign comrade, consign Halloween, if no be fake life? Lool. This greeting is holistic, and if we missed out on representing you, do twenty jumping jacks and feel better.

The past few days have been reflective and deeply saddening as Nigerians, once again in remembrance, mourned the loss of friends, brothers, sisters, children, Aunties, Uncles, parents, and loved ones. 20th of October, 2020 will forever be daunting in our memories and heavy in our hearts as we remember those who had come out en masse to demand for safer, accountable systems of governance, but met death, death at the hands of those who had sworn to protect, guide and guard them, at the Lekki toll gate. May their souls continue to rest in the bosom of the Almighty, Amen. (Please say a prayer)

Next is not a newbie to the 234 Tribe, Toyoelejo! Toyoelejo is still on the journey of self-discovery. She makes sense of the world through stories and finds joy in expressing them through writing. She strongly believes that honest and straightforward communication can create deep connections. When asked to describe herself, she says- "I'm an open, sincere, and self-aware person. My friends often see me as funny and, honestly, I agree!" Her wandering mind always seeks answers to her questions. She's a storyteller and cherishes how casual conversations reveal a glimpse into others' lives, helping her not only understand them better but also find clarity in her journey.

She is brave yet fearful, bold yet sometimes hesitant, and occasionally struggles with my insecurities. Currently, she's savouring the simplicity of life and believes everyone should too.

Essential Tours- 234 Essential takes a train trip to Abeokuta; Olumo Rock, 🪨Ogun State Nigeria

Olumo Rock is a mountain in south-western Nigeria. It is located in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, and was normally used as a natural fortress during inter-tribal warfare in the 19th century.

Historically, the rock was a natural fortress for the Egbas during inter-tribal warfare in the 19th century. It provided protection to the Egba people when they needed it, and is now held in high esteem by the members of the clan.

The mountain, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nigeria, sits in the heart of Abeokuta – a name which means “Under the rock” in the Yoruba language. The rock has a height of 137 meters above sea level.
